RHS Receives More Culinary Arts Equipment

With the help of Robot Coupe, national representative for IPC Company, Billie Wilson has obtained approximately $1,400 in equipment for the RHS Culinary Arts Program.  IPC donated a commercial food processor and stick blender.

Brevard Rotary Club Donates Student Dictionaries

Brevard Rotary Club has once again donated student dictionaries to every third grader in the Transylvania County School system.

T. C. Henderson Elementary School

T.C. Henderson's annual Holiday Program took place before a "standing room only" crowd on December 3, 2007, in the RHS auditorium.  Every student at TCH performed at some point during the program.

T.C. Henderson students again participated in the annual Canned Food Drive for Sharing House.  The project was sponsored by fifth grade students under the direction of Sam Cathey. This year the school collected 565 pounds of food!

T. C. Henderson's staff conducted its own "Angel Tree" project.  Each staff member chose one needy family for which to provide holiday gifts.  This initiative continues to be immensely successful.

Rosman Elementary School

November was “Compassion Month” at Rosman Elementary School.  Students at each grade level chose a project that would show compassion and caring to others:

§      Kindergarten students collected money and supplies to support an animal shelter.

§      Mrs. Parker’s and Mrs. Higdon’s second graders prepared six Christmas boxes after raising $132.

§      Mrs. Dean’s second grade spearheaded food collection for the Sharing House and was supported by the rest of the school, including the More at Four students, in the collection of 225 food items.

§      Third graders contributed to the food drive and prepared holiday cards for Ivy Hill residents.

§      Fourth grade classes began fundraising activities for their Relay for Life project.

§      Fifth graders adopted a tiger through the World Wildlife Organization.  They received an adoption certificate and a stuffed tiger to commemorate their $100 donation.

In addition to the projects, students worked on activities, read stories, and had discussions about the meaning of compassion and how it impacts our lives.

Rosman Elementary School is beginning a Peer Mediation program with 18 representatives from grades 3-5.  Students will complete six hours of training with Katie Vogler, Center for Dialogue, and their school counselor, Martha Snow.  Peer mediation programs assist students in learning to solve their own problems and to make productive decisions when faced with conflict.  Staff members participated in a four-hour training session prior to the first day of school.  Similar programs across the country have resulted in fewer disciplinary referrals and fewer reported episodes of conflict.

RHS Donations to Operation Christmas Child

In the past two months, students from Rosman High School have collected over 250 shoebox gifts and donated almost 300 hours of volunteer time to Operation Christmas Child.  They recently traveled to the Charlotte warehouse to help process the boxes before they are shipped overseas.  Samaritan's Purse, who sponsors the project, hopes to collect 8 million boxes this year and ship them to over 100 different countries.

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association requires local boards to grant permission to employ non-faculty individuals as head coaches of varsity or junior varsity teams.  As a general practice, the Transylvania County Board of Education approves all volunteer and contract coaches for Transylvania County Schools.  John Tinsley will request approval of two additional coaches for 2007-2008 winter sports.  Additional names may be presented at future meetings.

At its November meeting, the State Board of Education approved the list of non-Title I schools in School Improvement based on 2006-2007 results under No Child Left Behind.  These schools are not subject to the same sanctions as Title I schools.  Non-Title I schools that do not make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in the same subject for two consecutive years must amend their school improvement plans to address their failure to make their targets in reading or math.  Brevard Middle School is on the list for Reading.

Attached for your review is the letter outlining the steps that must be taken for schools in this category and a confirmation form to be signed by the superintendent and local board chair.
